Short answer: asphalt repair in Tampa runs an estimated $250–$650 for a driveway pothole or small patch, $1–$3 per linear foot for hot-pour crack filling, and $2.50–$5.00 per square foot to resurface a worn driveway with a new layer. We fix the cause underneath, not just the hole on top.
What we repair
- Potholes in driveways, drive lanes and private roads.
- Cracks: single long cracks, joint cracks where old and new paving meet, and reflective cracks over concrete.
- Sunken areas over old trenches, failed pipes or soft fill.
- Root damage where trees have lifted the surface.
- Broken edges along lawns, curbs and swales.
- Utility cuts left uneven after plumbing or cable work.
How a proper patch is made
A lasting repair takes longer than shoveling asphalt into a hole, and it is the difference between fixing a spot once and fixing it every summer. We saw-cut the damaged area into a clean rectangle a little bigger than the damage, dig out the broken asphalt and any wet or soft base, top up and compact new stone, paint the vertical edges with tack coat so the new material bonds, then fill with hot asphalt and roll it level with the surrounding surface. On commercial lots we sometimes use infrared heating instead, which softens the existing asphalt so new material blends in without a seam.
Crack filling
Cracks are where water gets in, and water underneath is what turns a crack into a pothole. Cracks wider than about a quarter inch are cleaned out with compressed air and filled with a hot, rubberized sealant that stays flexible through Florida's heat. Hairline cracks are better left to a sealcoat, which fills them as it goes on.
Resurfacing: a new top on a sound base
When a driveway or lot is worn, gray and covered in surface cracks but still firm underfoot, resurfacing gives it a new top layer without the cost of tearing it out. Damaged spots are patched first, the surface is cleaned and tack-coated, and one and a half to two inches of new asphalt is paved over the top. Where the extra height would cause problems, at a garage slab or a curb, we mill a strip along that edge so the new surface sits flush.
Resurfacing is the wrong answer when the base has failed. Overlaying alligator-cracked or sinking asphalt just copies the cracks into the new layer within a year or two. If that is what we find, the quote will say so and price a full replacement alongside the repair, so you can decide.
When to call
Spring, before the rainy season, is the best time to fix cracks and small potholes, because summer storms enlarge every opening that is left. That said, a pothole in a drive lane or at a business entrance is a trip hazard and a liability, and we will patch it any time of year.

Questions
Why do potholes appear after heavy rain?
Water gets in through cracks, softens the sand and rock underneath, and traffic pushes the weakened asphalt down until it breaks away. Tampa's summer storms speed that up, which is why so many potholes appear between July and September.
Is cold patch from the hardware store good enough?
For a few weeks, as a stopgap. Bagged cold patch never bonds or compacts like hot asphalt and usually pops out. A proper repair cuts the edges square, fixes the base and compacts hot mix into the hole.
Can you match the color of the old asphalt?
New asphalt is always darker at first and fades over a season or two. If an even look matters, a sealcoat after the patches have cured makes the whole surface one color.
